Questions to Ask Your Orthodontist During a Consultation in Yorktown

You can straighten your teeth and improve your overall dental health by visiting an orthodontist. Orthodontists like Dr. Barry Glaser of Yorktown, New York, are specialists who complete four years of dental school and then study orthodonture for an additional two to three years. Ask an orthodontist these questions when you schedule an appointment for an initial consultation:

What should I expect from treatment? Dr. Barry Glaser, a top orthodontist in the Yorktown area, works with patients to help them match orthodontics to their lifestyles. There are a variety of treatment options, including traditional metal braces and clear braces. Virtually invisible, Invisalign retainers have become a popular choice for many adults because they are removable and easy to clean.

Can I afford it? Whether you choose traditional braces or Invisalign, you should talk with your orthodontist about the total cost of your care. Are there any possible hidden fees or charges for replacement parts? Most dental insurance programs include orthodontic care in their coverage. Dr. Glaser and his Yorktown staff work closely with patients to help them understand their total out-of-pocket expenses and to find affordable financing.

I don’t like pain. What can I expect? Orthodontics work is relatively painless. But you may experience discomfort through the process, especially if braces rub against the inside of the mouth. Options like Invisalign, which doesn’t have wire or brackets, are more comfortable for some clients.

How often do I schedule appointments? Treatment plans for Invisalign and other braces are individualized and depend on the severity of the correction. Orthodontics is a long-term commitment that can take anywhere from 12 months to 2 1/2 year of active treatment. Dr. Glaser schedules regular visits for adjustments and check ups and he might require an additional 1 to 2 years of retention follow-up.

How about brushing and flossing? People with metal and clear braces need to brush by tilting the toothbrush bristles at an angle, which helps get up under the wires of the braces and reach the tooth surface. Tooth decay and gum disease can be a problem with poor brushing. Decalcification, or white spots, on the enamel of teeth when the braces are removed is another problem when people don’t brush and floss effectively.

Will I have to limit playing sports or the food I eat? Active people will still be able to play sports, although Dr. Glaser suggests they wear a mouth guard for activities like football, soccer, basketball and wrestling. Sugary drinks, like soda or punch, should be limited. The consumption of hard, sticky and sugary foods should be kept to a minimum as well.

Three Questions for Your Orthodontist

orthodontist-mohegan-lake

Orthodontics can seem extremely complicated or even overwhelming for some patients near Mohegan Lake. But Glaser Orthodontics believes his patients should feel at ease throughout the entire orthodontic treatment process. That is why we have created this cheat sheet to ask the orthodontist and help answer all your questions about orthodontics:

1. At what age should my child or I seek orthodontic treatment?

Dr. Glaser says that the answer to this is that there is no right answer – every individual is different, so his or her mouth will be ready for orthodontic treatment at different times as well. Glaser Orthodontics does however suggest bringing in your child around age 7, when the teeth are starting to fully come in and protrude. This will allow Dr. Glaser and the team at Glaser Orthodontics to stay on top of any problems before they become big issues! Additionally, Glaser Orthodontics specializes in providing treatment to both children and adults, so there is no age limit. Stop by our office near Mohegan Lake whenever you are ready to reinvent your smile.

2. How do I know which kind of braces are right for me?

The answer to this is simple – you don’t have to know! When you come to our office near Mohegan Lake for an appointment, Dr. Glaser and the team will examine your mouth and evaluate what will need to be done in terms of length and complexity of the treatment. Then, Dr. Glaser will work with you to decide which kind of braces best suits your lifestyle. So don’t worry, Glaser Orthodontics will help figure out what is right for you, and will give you the proper guidance for your orthodontics near Mohegan Lake.

3. Can I just get Invisalign from my dentist?

Recently, many dentists in the Mohegan Lake area have started to offer Invisalign treatment systems. While this may seem like a more convenient option, in the long run it is a much better idea to get Invisalign from Glaser Orthodontics. Dr. Glaser is a certified orthodontist, which means straightening and realigning teeth is his specific specialty. Unlike a dentist, Dr. Glaser has seen many cases, and treated all kinds of patients with Invisalign, as well as other systems. In fact, Dr. Glaser is an Elite Preferred Provider of Invisalign which indicates an extremely high level of experience. This experience allows for better accuracy and more pristine results. Plus, the Glaser Orthodontics staff is here to help you integrate the Invisalign system into your lifestyle, and make your orthodontic experience as enjoyable as possible.

Is it Necessary to go to an Orthodontist for Braces?

orthodontist-braces-jefferson-valley

Do I really need to go to an orthodontist to get braces? You may love your family dentist, and he or she may have told you that they can “do your braces” for a lot less money than an orthodontist. While this is very nice, it’s also a big gamble. Glaser Orthodontics says a regular dentist most likely will not understand how complicated each case may be. You don’t want to risk adding more time and expense to your orthodontic treatment which could happen by using a regular dentist. It may be likely you would need to have corrective work done by Dr. Glaser and his orthodontic team.

Glaser Orthodontics says that orthodontists are specially trained in tooth movement and jaw function; dentists are not. Yes, some dentists have taken a few course hours to learn how to do Invisalign or other types of braces, but that is not the main thing that they do. In terms of education, orthodontists first go to dental school and become dentists. Then they attend an orthodontic program for several more years to learn specifically about tooth movement, jaw function, and facial aesthetics. After that, they take a special exam to become Board Certified. Orthodontists handle assessing all alignment issues, and then they can advise patients on procedures like braces. When a patient decides to move forward on braces, an orthodontist can help them select the best option, and then manage their care.

Dr. Glaser and other orthodontists have worked hard to get specialized training and education, in order to provide you with access to different dental solutions like clear braces, palette expanders and all types of braces. For the best orthodontic treatment in the Jefferson Valley area, call Glaser Orthodontics at 914-739-6400.

Orthodontist in Westchester explains Types of Braces

kids orthodontist westchester

Braces have been a part of growing up in Westchester for as long as we can remember. They have always been known to heighten that awkward phase of adolescence by adding uncomfortable metal and insecurities. However, modern orthodontics has made that part of treatment a little easier to stomach. New advances have successfully created alternatives to metal braces that are more appearance conscious. Braces have also become more accepted as a transition into adulthood, and many teenagers even use them as a fashion statement rather than a dreaded accessory. In Westchester, Dr. Glaser is a leading provider in all kinds of braces, including traditional metal, Invisalign, and ceramic.

Did you know that there are different types of braces?? Here at Dr. Glaser Orthodontics in Westchester, we are happy to offer the right type of braces that best suits your child’s lifestyle. Dr. Glaser Orthodontics is pleased to offer traditional, ceramic braces or the popular Invisalign and Invisalign Teen for adolescents.

Traditional metal braces may be referred to an “oldie but goodie.” They are typically within a set price range that makes them just as cost effective as more advanced procedures. Metal braces that we offer at Dr. Glaser Orthodontics are the solution to any and all oral misalignments. Metal braces have come a long way in terms of look as well. Many times they can be customized to have colored bands, and some brands have found ways to slim down their bulky appearance. Dr. Dr. Glaser can provide some of the best results in the Westchester area and has exceptional experience with treating all types of cases with metal braces.

Ceramic braces are very similar to traditional metal, but with some added benefits. Firstly, they are much less noticeable than metal. The ceramic brackets make them blend with the teeth much more naturally than regular braces would. Secondly, they can be more comfortable because of their different materials. Many brands also use advanced wire systems in ceramic braces so as to make them more comfortable on a day-to-day basis. Much like traditional metal braces they are on for a set amount of time, and this time varies with each case. Dr. Glaser Orthodontics can provide quality treatment with these braces, as well as answer any questions about them that you may have.

Finally, Invisalign braces are sets of clear plastic aligners that can be used as an alternative to more obvious metal or ceramic types. They are comfortable to wear due to their sleek material, and run within a similar price range to other options. The biggest perk of using Invisalign systems is that they are removable, making eating and brushing much easier. The popularity of Invisalign in Westchester has increased tremendously in the past few years and has been a rising trend across the country. Dr. Dr. Glaser has been recognized as a top provider of this treatment to patients in and around the Westchester area.

Dr. Glaser Orthodontics in Westchester knows that orthodontic technology has come a long way and we are happy to be able to offer the best orthodontic treatment plan. That is why we offer traditional metal braces, as well as ceramic and Invisalign, to patients in Westchester. Each of these treatments has their own benefits and disadvantageous. Orthodontist Yorktown Heights says Preserve Your Memory through Good Oral Hygiene

kids orthodontist westchester

oral health yorktown heightsDid you know that your memory can be linked to your oral hygiene?? A report in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry (webmd.com) showed that adults with gingivitis (swollen, bleeding gums) performed worse on tests of memory and other cognitive skills than did those with healthier gums and mouths. Individuals with gingivitis were more likely to perform poorly in mainly two areas, subtraction and verbal recall.  Both are skills that are needed every day.

A common hindrance to good oral hygiene is crooked teeth.  Having crooked teeth makes it harder to floss and many give up flossing because it is difficult to get in between teeth.  What people need to remember is that flossing is THE best way to remove plaque from in between teeth!  Plaque is essentially bacteria and, if not removed, grows within the gums, causing gingivitis.

Let Glaser Orthodontics help you and your child with good oral health. The staff in Yorktown Heights is available to do a full evaluation of your mouth and give expert advice on how to have optimal oral health.  Who knows it may help increase your child’s test scores. Why not give it a try.

Research supports that a healthy mouth and a healthy body go hand in hand (webmd.com). Good oral hygiene and oral health can improve your overall health, reducing the risk of serious disease and perhaps even preserving your memory in your golden years.

Give Glaser Orthodontics a call today in their office in Yorktown Heights to improve your oral health and improve memory!

How to Brush Your Teeth Effectively

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your oral hygiene routine. For a healthy mouth and smile Glaser Orthodontics recommends you:
Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
Replace your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
Glaser Orthodontics also says make sure to use ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.

The proper brushing technique is to:

Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.

Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes.

Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

Of course, brushing your teeth is only a part of a complete oral care routine. You should also make sure to:

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach.

This helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

Although you are visiting Glaser Orthodontics, Dr. Barry Glaser recommends that you visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us in our Cortlandt Manor location.

What Food to Avoid When Wearing Braces

Summer is a time to relax, indulge in summer foods, and just have fun! From barbeques to county fairs to going to the movies, there are hazards that brace wearers should be aware of for the health of their teeth. To avoid damage to your teeth, mouth, and braces, we offer the following tips:

     – Avoid eating meat off the bone – At your next BBQ, meats on the bone, like ribs and chicken, need to be eaten with care. Eating meat off the bone can cause your brackets to become unglued. Be sure to cut the meat off the bone first and then you can enjoy that mouthwatering BBQ. Also, don’t forget to cut the corn off the cob!

     – Avoid chewing ice – It may be hot at the beach, but avoid chewing ice in order to cool down. Not only can the ice get caught in the brackets and wires, causing damage to them, the ice can damage your teeth by causing little hairline fractures!

     – Wear lip balm with at least an SPF of 15 – Your lips are a part of your mouth and should also be protected. When outside, especially at the beach, not only should you wear sunscreen, you should also protect your lips from the sun’s rays by applying a quick swipe of lip balm.

     – Avoid sticky foods – The county fair always has fun foods, but there are some you should avoid when wearing braces. Candied apples, licorice, and taffy are foods you should definitely stay away from! Their stickiness can cause braces to break. Plus the sugar isn’t good for your teeth!

– Be careful of popcorn – Movies and popcorn go together, but extra caution must be taken when wearing braces.  The kernels can get jammed between the wires and your teeth, causing damage to your gums and your braces.

Even with this list of foods to avoid, there are plenty you can still enjoy this summer! The most important thing you can do is to continue brushing and flossing regularly in order to keep your teeth healthy. Remember, braces are temporary and soon you’ll be able to enjoy it all! Be sure to call Dr. Glaser at his Cortlandt Manor office at (914)739-6400 if you have any questions or concerns.

How Kids Can Maintain Braces at Summer Camp in Cortlandt Manor NY

Sending kids away to summer camp for weeks or even months is, for many, a yearly tradition. Camp in Cortlandt Manor or even out of the state is something fun and exciting for your kids to look forward to, and we at Glaser Orthodontics are here to make sure your braces or Invisalign treatment isn’t hindering the summer fun.

It is important to maintain the same oral care and routine kids have at home while away, so their braces stay in shape. Dr. Glaser recommends giving your child a “braces camp kit” filled with all the necessities related to their teeth. The kit can include plenty of extra toothbrushes and wax in case a wire breaks. The important thing is to maintain clean teeth while you are away. If anything were to happen to the braces or Invisalign, inform the counselors so the camp can arrange for them to see a local orthodontist who can help. The main thing is for your camper to be comfortable until you resume your regular schedule with your family orthodontist. Just like at-home eating habits, the same instructions are given while away at camp; avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods.

Our main goal at Glaser Orthodontics is to make sure your Westchester camper is completely prepared to maintain braces during the summer months. If you want to schedule a visit before they leave, feel free to stop by or call us! Last but not least, while away at camp, have fun and see you when you return!

Important Signs to Look For When Preparing For Treatment in Westchester County

Deciding to seek orthodontic treatment can be a big decision. Many children, as well as adults, often unknowingly begin to see many oral issues that may be associated with an orthodontic treatment. These problems are less obvious than just simply crooked teeth, and they do need attention. Dr. Glaser recommends to look for the following signs when assessing if and when you will need treatment.

– Difficulty chewing or biting

– Misaligned top and bottom rows of teeth

– Under- or overbite

– Uneven wearing on the teeth

– Difficulty speaking

– Thumb sucking

– Grinding or tooth clenching

– Jaw pain

– Tooth crowding

– Jaw shifts when biting

– Excessive spacing between teeth

Each of these problems can be a signal of the necessity of braces. When looking for treatment options, Dr. Glaser offers many different options that can solve any and all of the issues. Invisalign is a clear alternative to braces that can solve many of these cases. Clear braces, as well as traditional braces, can also be a solution. There are also many orthodontic appliances such as permanent retainers and palate expanders that can play a role in solving oral difficulties.
