Foods to Eat with Braces

Foods to Eat with Braces

In this post, we’ll discuss foods to eat with braces. Unlike Invisalign, braces always remain attached to the teeth until your smile is perfected. Thus, you have to be mindful of what foods you consume.

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to figure out using some simple rules. And remember, when treatment is over, you can indulge again. At Glaser Orthodontics, we remind patients that these small dietary adjustments help protect your braces and ensure smooth progress throughout treatment. Consider it a reward for a job well-done as you show off a fantastic smile for life.

Avoid These Foods When Wearing Braces

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) suggests staying away from foods that fall into these categories:

  • Hard
  • Sticky
  • Chewy
  • Crunchy

Avoiding these categories of food is essential with bracers. And, even if you wear Invisalign, it’s a good idea to limit foods like this. If you do eat foods like these, it’s always necessary to carefully rinse, brush, and floss after snacks or meals.

Some foods, like apples or carrots, can be enjoyed if cut up into small pieces. However, chomping into a whole apple isn’t a great idea. Wires and brackets can be pulled loose or contorted, requiring an emergency appointment.

Limit Sugary Beverages

As you might expect, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends avoiding sugary drinks with braces or Invisalign. Even diet soda can promote cavities, and sugary sodas are not a great idea for anybody. Also, limit the number of sports or energy drinks and sugary, acidic fruit juice.

With aligners, you have to watch out for hot liquids like coffee. Otherwise, the plastic could warp or stain. However, you can enjoy these beverages when the aligners are out. Staining is also a potential problem with braces, as we’ll look at next.

Avoid Foods That Stain

Some foods can stain the brackets of braces, particularly the clear ceramic variety. Thus, it’s a good idea to avoid them if possible. Otherwise, clean and rinse well after partaking.

Examples of Foods that Stain:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red Wine
  • Beets
  • Curry
  • Currants
  • Mustard
  • Tomatoes
  • Grape Juice
  • Berries
  • Soy sauce
  • Grape juice
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Some food coloring

Some Foods To Avoid Temporarily

Right after getting braces, your mouth will be more sensitive. Thus, there is a period of adjustment when it may be better to avoid some foods for a time. After this period, you can work them back into your diet.

Avoid these foods until you adjust to braces:

  • Any pieces of bread that aren’t soft or have thick crusts
  • Citrus and spicy foods can be irritating
  • Tough or thick cuts of meat
  • Ice cream if your teeth are sensitive to cold

On the last item, ice cream can help some people adjust, but others are sensitive to the cold temporarily.

Foods That Are Out with Braces

In addition to what we’ve looked at so far, these foods are best to avoid during treatment. Then, when your braces come off, you can enjoy them again.

  • Nuts
  • Ice
  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Hard tacos
  • Chewing gum
  • Hard crackers
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples, carrots, hard veggies (unless sliced into small pieces)
  • Tough bread like bagels, pretzels, or pizza crust

As noted, these fall into the hard, sticky, chewy, crunchy categories.

These Foods Are In with Braces

Now for some delicious options to enjoy. As you can see, they’re softer and won’t stick to braces and wires.

  • Soups
  • Seafood
  • Soft fruit
  • Pancakes
  • Muffins
  • Puddings
  • Soft bread
  • Soft cheese
  • Cooked rice
  • Milkshakes
  • Cooked pasta
  • Oats and grains
  • Soft wraps and tortillas
  • Cooked and soft veggies
  • Soft desserts and cakes

These Treats Are a Fright!

Halloween candy is tempting, but before you eat, remember to avoid any treats that are:

  • Hard
  • Crunchy
  • Sticky
  • Chewy
  • Or will stain your braces

So, if you receive candy or another item that falls into one of these categories, it’s probably best to avoid it. All year, it’s best to limit sugary sweets and be sure to rinse, brush, and floss after eating snacks or meals.

Soft, Safer Treats to Enjoy

Below are a few treats that are softer and less likely to damage braces.

  • Kit-Kats
  • Pixie Stix
  • Malt Balls
  • Soft cake
  • Apple cider
  • 3 Muskateers
  • Jell-O and pudding
  • Ice cream and yogurt
  • Doughnuts and soft cookies
  • Peeled thinly-chopped apples
  • Soft cheese puffs (never popcorn)

Treats That Can Be a Nightmare

Many popular Halloween candies are a problem for those with braces. They fall into the categories we looked at before: Hard, Crunchy, Sticky, and Chewy. Thus, they can get stuck to wires and brackets and may result in an unplanned emergency visit to your orthodontist.

  • Candy corns
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Chewing gum
  • Caramel and taffy
  • Skittles and Starbursts
  • Lollipops and hard candies
  • Popcorn, chips, hard pretzels
  • Licorice, gummies, and jelly beans
  • Jawbreakers (always a bad idea)
  • Nuts (except soft peanut butter)
  • Apples and carrots (unless finely chopped and peeled)

If any of these treats are a favorite, don’t worry. By avoiding them for now, your braces will come off faster and more comfortably. Then, you’ll be able to enjoy them again. Even better, you’ll have a perfect smile!

Thanksgiving Foods And Braces

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and Glaser Orthodontics near Montrose is here to help with your orthodontic treatment concerns around Thanksgiving foods and braces. Fortunately, there are brace friendly foods like mash potatoes that are plentiful at Thanksgiving meals.

Thanksgiving is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the U.S. and it has been a tradition for over 150 years. With this holiday coming up, we expect many of our patients near Montrose to be spending time with friends, family and of course, food! Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy and pies! It’s hard to eat sensible on Thanksgiving Day, but we at Glaser Orthodontics are here to remind you how to keep your teeth and braces in mind with this plethora of food. Here are some tips:

Pilgrims didn’t drink soda and you shouldn’t either! With all the sugar that is packed in traditional thanksgiving food, the added sugar in soda is definitely not necessary. Instead of cracking open a can of your favorite carbonated drink opt for milk or water. You don’t want that sugar to get trapped by your braces. Your teeth will thank you later when you save them from stains and decay.

Ask anyone and they will say that turkey makes them sleepy. Although we can’t deny that we want to take a power nap after feasting, this myth is actually not true! If you still feel yourself falling asleep after eating, remember to brush and floss before you snooze to prevent junk food from wearing away at your teeth especially for brace wearers. That small but vital step can help you and your teeth rest easy.

Although it is tempting, do not try to crack nuts with your teeth! Many like to snack on nuts during Thanksgiving, and teeth are great tools, but use a nutcracker instead to save your teeth and a trip to Glaser Orthodontics to fix damaged braces.

Don’t become too stressed. Stress can lead to poor oral habits, and although it’s hard to stop and take a breather around this busy holiday, holidays are a time to make great memories with your family and friends.

For more tips on oral habits around orthodontic treatments near Montrose or for a consultation, please contact Glaser Orthodontics or visit our office near Montrose. Happy Thanksgiving!
