Is it Necessary to go to an Orthodontist for Braces?

Do I really need to go to an orthodontist to get braces? You may love your family dentist, and he or she may have told you that they can “do your braces” for a lot less money than an orthodontist. While this is very nice, it’s also a big gamble. Glaser Orthodontics says a regular dentist most likely will not understand how complicated each case may be. You don’t want to risk adding more time and expense to your orthodontic treatment which could happen by using a regular dentist. It may be likely you would need to have corrective work done by Dr. Glaser and his orthodontic team.

Glaser Orthodontics says that orthodontists are specially trained in tooth movement and jaw function; dentists are not. Yes, some dentists have taken a few course hours to learn how to do Invisalign or other types of braces, but that is not the main thing that they do. In terms of education, orthodontists first go to dental school and become dentists. Then they attend an orthodontic program for several more years to learn specifically about tooth movement, jaw function, and facial aesthetics. After that, they take a special exam to become Board Certified. Orthodontists handle assessing all alignment issues, and then they can advise patients on procedures like braces. When a patient decides to move forward on braces, an orthodontist can help them select the best option, and then manage their care.

Dr. Glaser and other orthodontists have worked hard to get specialized training and education, in order to provide you with access to different dental solutions like clear braces, palette expanders and all types of braces. Thinking about Getting Braces

Are you thinking about getting braces? Glaser Orthodontics near Yorktown Heights says that braces have changed in recent years. Here are three facts about braces that you might find interesting:

1. There is no age limit for dental braces

When most people think of orthodontic braces, they think of teenagers. But an increasing amount of adults are getting braces, too. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, Glaser Orthodontics says you could benefit from getting your teeth straightened. One of the most important things to consider is the state of your gums and jaw bones. If you have unhealthy gums, a lot of gum recession, or bone loss, braces may not be recommended because the pressure they put on your gums could cause unfavorable complications.

Why do people get braces in adulthood? Dr. Glaser says that some patient’s families could not afford braces when they were children. Now that they are adults, they want to improve their smile and their dental health. Some adults had braces as children or teenagers, but didn’t wear their retainers, causing their teeth to become crooked again. So make sure to wear your retainer after your braces come off.

2. Your “bite” is as important as the straightness and aesthetics of your teeth

Many people think that braces only make teeth straight. In fact, they accomplish a lot more than that. Dr. Glaser will evaluate a lot of things when you go in for your consultation. Are your teeth straight? Do they meet properly? Does your tongue stick out of your front teeth? Does your jaw hurt or click? Do you have a lot of crowding or large gaps? Have you lost all your baby teeth? Are your teeth and gums healthy? Do you have problems breathing or speaking?

One of the most important things that Dr. Glaser evaluates is your “bite.” This is the way that you’re top and bottom teeth meet when you open and close your mouth. Glaser Orthodontics is just as concerned with how your mouth functions as it is with making your teeth look great. After all, what good are straight teeth if you can’t chew or speak properly, or if you get TMJ headaches?

3. Cost and treatment times vary

Braces aren’t cheap. Glaser Orthodontics accepts many different insurances. If braces are not covered by your insurance, Glaser Orthodontics will work with you and put together a payment plan that you are comfortable with.

Everyone’s first question with braces is How long will I be in braces? That depends on your individual case. While the average treatment is two years (24 months), Glaser Orthodontics will evaluate each individual and give their expert advice. Although two years in braces may seem like a long time, it will go by faster than you realize.

Glaser Orthodontics near Yorktown Heights is always here to help you with your braces. If you have any concerns or questions, call us at 914-739-6400.

How to Clean Invisalign Aligners

Do you know how to keep your Invisalign aligners clean? Glaser Orthodontics is here to help you keep your aligners clean and fresh. Dr. Glaser says that patients should wear their Invisalign aligners for approximately 22 hours each day. Patients remove their aligners for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing, which is the perfect time to clean them. Glaser Orthodontics near Mohegan Lake recommends the following methods:

Method #1: Some patients like using denture cleaning tablets. While you eat you can soak your aligners in denture cleaner (one aligner per one tablet of denture cleaner). At Glaser Orthodontics, we suggest leaving the aligners in the cleaning product for approximately one hour. This method of cleaning your Invisalign aligners can be done every day if you want. The denture cleaning tablets will not damage the material that Invisalign uses.

Method #2: Use a baking soda product. Dr. Glaser suggests dissolving 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of water, and then soaking your trays in the baking soda water for about an hour. This method can be repeated throughout the day as you feel needed.

Method #3: Brush your aligners with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste, this will help keep them fresh and clean of any particles. Dr. Glaser also says it’s a good idea to brush your teeth before putting your Invisalign back on. This will keep food particles from being trapped under your aligners.

These methods will work for both Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. At Glaser Orthodontics, we want to help keep our patients’ Invisalign aligners clean. If you have any questions regarding your Invisalign® care don’t hesitate to give us a call at 914-739-6400. If you are out and unable to use one of these recommended methods, make sure to rinse before putting your aligners back on. Keep smiling while you straighten your teeth invisibly!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign treatment is becoming a very popular form of orthodontic treatment. It has many benefits, including:

  • It’s clear: this orthodontic appliance is comprised of a series of clear, plastic aligner trays that, as they are switched out over time, gradually shift your teeth into alignment. The material that your aligners are made of are completely clear, making your treatment virtually invisible.
  • It’s comfortable: Clear aligners are thermoplastic and are molded to fit your specific teeth. As a result, your aligners are very comfortable; some patients even remark that they forget they’re even wearing them!
  • It’s removable: Your Invisalign aligner trays are completely removable for eating, brushing, and flossing. This means you can maintain your daily routines of diet and oral hygiene without hindrance from your orthodontic treatment

What Type of Braces are best for my Teen?

Is your teen worried about his/her image and how braces are going to look? At Glaser Orthodontics, we recognize that image is very important to a teen and the thought of braces that includes metal brackets and wires does not sound like the next hottest thing. The good news is that there is Invisalign Teen® which is an alternative to traditional braces. Glaser Orthodontics can fit your teen with Invisalign Teen® and give your teen a whole new way of wearing braces for a “clearly” amazing smile!

How does Invisalign Teen® work? Much in the same way as Invisalign®, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to the teenage lifestyle. For instance, Invisalign Teen® is designed with compliance indicators that fade from dark to light during the two-week period during which that particular tray is used. Once the indicator has faded, teens know to change trays. And, each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken, which is another big benefit for teens!

For Invisalign Teen® to be the most effective, the same guidelines for Invisalign® should be followed:

• Wear each set of aligners for about two weeks
• Remove the aligners only to eat, drink, brush and floss
• Wear the clear aligners for at a minimum of 20-22 hours per day
• Visit us every 8-10 weeks for an orthodontic check-up
• See your dentist every 6 months for regular cleanings

Sounds cool right? Contact Dr. Glaser at 914-739-6400 or visit our location near Croton-on-Hudson for any questions. Keep enjoying being a teen with Invisalign Teen®.

How Do Clear Braces Work?

Clear braces are the preferred teeth straightening system for many adults, allowing you to maintain a clear smile while straightening your teeth. Regardless of the kind that you use, they straighten your teeth as effectively as traditional metal braces, all while looking virtually invisible. You can have the confidence to smile not only after, but during, your treatment. But what kinds of options are there, and how do they work?

  • Ceramic/porcelain braces: clear braces like these function the exact same way as traditional metal braces. The only difference is that they use tooth-colored ceramic or porcelain brackets instead of metal ones, creating the effect of being “clear”.
  • Clear aligners: clear aligners, like Invisalign, are another popular form. Instead of brackets and wires, aligner trays are made of a clear, smooth plastic that is molded to your individual teeth. Invisalign is not only virtually invisible, but they are also removable for eating, brushing, and flossing, and the smooth plastic makes them very comfortable.
