Protect Your Teeth During Flu Season

It’s flu season near Yorktown Heights and Glaser Orthodontics says not to forget to protect your teeth during flu season. Glaser Orthodontics warns that some of the remedies you use to help get over the flu can lead to cavities if you’re not careful. So to avoid cavities this flu season, follow Dr. Glaser’s advice.

Just because cough drops are sold in the medicine aisle near Yorktown Heights doesn’t mean they’re healthy. Glaser Orthodontics says that most cough drops are loaded with sugar. So after soothing your throat with a lozenge, be sure to brush well especially if you have braces. Whether the sugar comes from a cough drop or a hard candy, it reacts with the sticky plaque that coats your teeth. Then bacteria in the plaque convert the sugar into an acid that eats away at tooth enamel. Hello, cavities.

Sometimes we need a little soda to help us feel better during the cold and flu season but remember about your teeth. Candy isn’t the only culprit when it comes to added sugar. Sodas can have up to 11 teaspoons of sugar per serving. To add insult to injury, sodas also contain phosphoric and citric acids, which eat away at tooth enamel. Diet soft drinks let you skip the sugar, but they may have even more acid in the form of the artificial sweeteners. The team at Glaser Orthodontics says to make sure you rinse your mouth with water after consuming sugar sodas to prevent cavities.

Fruit juice is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, but unfortunately most juices are also loaded with sugar. Some juices can have as much sugar per serving as soda. For example, there are only 10 more grams of sugar in orange soda than in orange juice. Fruits are naturally sweet, so look for juice that has no added sugar. You can also reduce the sugar content by diluting juice with some water.

So when fighting the flu this season, Glaser Orthodontics recommends that you follow the above advice to help prevent cavities. As always, contact our office near Yorktown Heights at 914-739-6400 with any orthodontic questions regarding your teeth this flu season.

Clear Ceramic Braces in Cortlandt Manor, NY

Glaser Orthodontics is excited and proud to offer clear ceramic braces in Cortlandt Manor, NY! Combining tieless braces with high-tech archwires, these virtually invisible braces are quite comfortable; and, as for the result, you’ll receive a full, natural-looking smile.

How Do Clear Ceramic Braces Work?

Clear ceramic braces work similarly to traditional metal braces, with some subtle differences that make for big changes. Metal braces are comprised of metal brackets and archwires. Clear ceramic braces employ this same technique for straightening teeth, but instead of metal, the brackets are made of a tooth-colored ceramic. This tooth-colored material is what makes the braces appear “clear”. Tooth-colored wires can be applied, as well, for nearly invisible treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Clear Ceramic Braces?

Now that you know how clear ceramic braces work, you can understand the many benefits of this orthodontic treatment, including:

  • They are virtually invisible: the tooth-colored aspects of this appliance is perfect for those who are worried about the appearance of other orthodontic treatments. This is particularly appealing as a form of adult orthodontic treatment because many adults prefer to maintain their appearance in their workplace, at home, etc.
  • They are comfortable: ceramic materials provide a smooth, comfortable surface for braces. Your clear braces will have ample access to the insides of your cheeks and lips, and these braces won’t cut or tear.
  • They are effective: increasing the amount of comfort and concealability does not decrease the effectiveness of your treatment. Clear ceramic braces are equally as effective as other top orthodontic treatments.

Tips to Keep Your Braces Sparkling Clean

Dr. Glaser says it’s important to keep your braces clean. Food has more hiding spots than usual in your mouth now that there are braces, so you have to be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. Keep your oral appearance up to par while wearing braces with these ten tips from Glaser Orthodontics:

One tooth at a time. When you brush, Glaser Orthodontics stresses that you take your time with each individual tooth–At least 10 seconds each–And pay close attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

It’s all about the angles. Brush your top teeth and braces with your brush angled downward, and brush your bottom teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

The tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, Glaser Orthodontics says that it’s equally important to clean the inner and chewing surface of your teeth, your tongue and along your gum line (a key spot for plaque buildup).

Brush after every meal. Food can easily get caught in your braces and in between your teeth. This can lead to tooth decay; also, the longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater the opportunity for plaque to form. If you can’t brush after every meal then thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

Make a first aid teeth cleaning kit. Get into the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Design a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your bag.

Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

Interproximal brushes. Sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes, these cone-shaped brushes come in handy when you need to reach those spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t reach.

Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some Glaser Orthodontics patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader or Superfloss. A floss threader helps you get the floss into those tight places, and Superfloss is an all-in-one product which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces and regular floss for narrow spaces.

Valentine Myth about Braces

Can braces get locked while kissing? Well just in time for Valentine’s Day, Glaser Orthodontics in Cortlandt Manor refers to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) to answer the myth surrounding locking braces and orthodontic treatment.  Currently more than four million children and one million adults in North America wear braces.

If two people with braces kiss, can their braces become locked together?  Glaser Orthodontics says that with today’s smaller sleeker braces, it would be extremely difficult – almost impossible – to lock braces while kissing.  So if Cupid is pointing his arrow at you this Valentine’s Day, Glaser Orthodontics says not to worry about your braces getting locked with someone else’s braces.

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate the ones we love, and what better way to celebrate than with a kiss! Glaser Orthodontics in Cortlandt Manor does not want you to worry about your braces getting locked.  What you may have to worry about is that box of chocolates.  It’s those sweet, sour and sticky candies that Dr. Glaser says are known to damage braces and teeth even if they do taste great.

Glaser Orthodontics is always available to answer your questions concerning braces and orthodontic treatment. So whether it’s Valentine’s Day or any other day, contact our office in Cortlandt Manor
